Baw Baw Shire Community Grants Program

Filming seven interviews and B-roll at seven locations necessitated a rapid pace, requiring James and Sam to divide their efforts to capture the necessary content within the allotted time-frame. However, the challenging logistics were undeniably worthwhile! We caught some amazing examples of how the Baw Baw Shire Community Grants Program is making a real difference within the community, by supporting  the delivery of community programs, events, projects, environmental initiatives and the purchase of equipment.

Throughout the interviews, a consistent theme emerged: the Baw Baw Shire Community Grants Program is not just about funding but about fostering genuine community partnerships. We repeatedly heard words like ‘supportive,’ ‘encouraging,’ ‘invaluable,’ and ‘community,’ emphasising that Shire staff are dedicated to making the application process accessible and empowering local community groups to thrive. This collaborative approach ensures that funding truly benefits everyone and strengthens the fabric of the community.

A Minor Capital Works Grant enabled the Rokeby Hall and Reserve Committee, led by Kate (Committee President), to refurbish the hall. The long-overdue painting project, not undertaken in nearly 25 years, has significantly improved the appearance, making it a more inviting and appealing space for the community groups that regularly use it. Whilst we were filming, Probus groups from throughout Baw Baw Shire were enjoying a social day, making great use of this beautiful facility.

Nicole, Secretary and Treasurer of Neerim-Neerim South Football and Netball Club, explained that a Minor Capital Works Grant facilitated the replacement of their ageing fence. This vital improvement, made possible by the generous support of the Baw Baw Shire Council as the primary funder, has significantly enhanced safety and aesthetics for both players and spectators. This surely has created a more welcoming and enjoyable environment for the entire Club.

The Baw Baw Arts Alliance received funding for their ‘Art in the Street’ program, provided local artists with canvases, T-shirts, and crucial support. Jeff, from the Alliance, outlined how this initiative not only promotes artistic expression but also gives artists the opportunity for their works of art to be exhibited, admired and purchased. Certainly, the cultural vibrancy of the community is ultimately enhanced by Art in the Street.

The Warragul Municipal Band has benefited from three grants to date; the latest to fund their project, ‘Satellite Music Education programs- feasibility and equipment’. Treasurer, Sarah, spoke about their innovative Satellite Music Education program, which aims to bring music education to all corners of the Baw Baw Shire, fostering a love of music in people across our region.

The Ellinbank Badminton Club successfully purchased 100 dozen shuttles, thanks to their latest grant. Today, the well-equipped sporting facility attracts both junior and senior players, a far cry from the rundown shed that representative, Ken, described as the Club’s previous home before receiving funding from Baw Baw Shire grants.

Margaret explained that the Tetoora Road Community Centre first accessed the Grants Program in 2015-2016. This year, they received funding for their ‘Spruced Up for Spring’ project, which included the purchase of a  wheelbarrow, four lockable garage cabinets and two tear-drop display flags. These improvements will undoubtedly enhance the functionality of the Community Centre, a venue that hosts wonderful annual community events and is available for hire.

Our longtime friends, Dan and Laura, the dynamic duo behind The Hallora Marathon Event, have successfully leveraged past grants to enhance this renowned event that supports cancer research. Funding has been used to purchase participant medals and provide enhanced traffic management, reflecting their dedication to creating a more engaging, enjoyable, and safe experience for all involved.

Beyond celebrating successes, the annual Grants Reception is an invaluable opportunity for participants and Shire staff to connect. Our interviews revealed that hearing others’ stories sparked imaginations for new ideas and fostered a sense of community, proving that the reception is much more than just a ceremony.

We’ve always felt a strong sense of belonging within the Baw Baw Shire and are actively involved with a number of community groups. This video project provided a unique opportunity to engage with the community on a deeper level, further solidifying our love for this vibrant region.
