Did we want the chance to film Odyssey Group's new toy, AKA a line boat, being put through sea trials on Port Phillip Bay? Absolutely! Here's a snippet to pique your interest.

James hunkered down in the boat’s bow, bracing himself to maintain absolute control of the drone, with the added advantage of somewhat mitigating the wintry chill. ❄️

Hanging fast-paced doughnuts around a tug spraying high-pressure water was a lot of fun, albeit very challenging with the drone filming. The shots captured made the adrenaline spike worth it!

All in all, the day of filming with Odyssey's crew on their fast-paced craft was top-notch. 👍

63.8km of friendship, encouragement, endurance, surprises, laughter and more than a little sweat made up the Baw Baw Bash Variety Vic Fundraiser on Saturday. The photos captured by our favourite photographer (and part of the Red Dirt to Reef media team), Frank Amato, give a hint to the depths of community we enjoy in Baw Baw.

James, resplendent in human-powered mini-bash Land Rover Series III, not only ran his first ever Marathon but Ultra Marathon with the added challenge of Baw Baw Shire hills. A special mention to Gabe, who ran the entire course alongside James - truly a friendship forged in the crucible of physical endurance. Congratulations too to REDfusion’s Chris who ran a personal record of 30km!

Bash cars “Cat in the Hat” and “Lillibet” (“Dragon Wagon”) were invaluable escorts on the legs that necessitated running on perilous roads. Neerim South’s Sergeant Murray Brown and Senior Constable Stephen Cranston provided traffic control at key intersections and, with lights flashing, led the escort for part of the journey.

The crowd at Rokeby cried with laughter when James was required to submit to a random breath test by the humorous S.C. Cranston. Thankfully, he was given the all clear to continue driving his sturdy little Land Rover.

At no point was James left to run on his own! It was overwhelming to have so many people support him at various legs of the event - the last two kilometres from Noojee Trestle Bridge to Nooj Pub had 30+ to see James across the finish line.

So many thanks to so very many who contributed in untold ways by supporting this fundraiser and, ultimately, Variety Vic Bash, always “Doin’ it for the kids.”

James, REDfusion’s principal cinematographer, is part of the Variety Vic Red Dirt to Reef Bash’s official media team, providing daily video coverage of the event held 16-24 August. Woohoo!!

This Saturday, James will be running his first Ultra Marathon to raise awareness and funds for this wonderful charity. For a real spectacle, he may even run the entire 60km strapped to his own mini-bash cardboard car, with full-size Bash cars as escorts.

The course James will be running is from Drouin to Warragul Parkrun, then onto Rokeby, Neerim and crossing the finish line at the amazing @nooj_pub. If you'd like to support James by running parts of the course or even the entire route, or encouraging him at key milestones, he'd be absolutely stoked - message us and we'll send through a course outline.

Over a period of two years Mike Woods and James spent untold hours travelling together in the making of the short documentary, ‘Returning our Ancestors'. This project commenced in 2014 and the original screening was due when COVID stepped in.

James was truly honoured to be invited by the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council to the premiere screening of the film during Reconciliation Week 2024. Watching every scene on the big screen evoked deep memories of the stories entrusted to us, the significant sites we visited and the passionate people we met, including respected elder and lynchpin of the project, Uncle Jim.

After making the rounds at various events, the three featured photos (the middle one is James’ own handiwork) will take up permanent residence at Moonee Valley Council chambers. There is also the possibility that prints will find a home at Melbourne Museum, which is a really exciting prospect!
